The Vienna Opera Ball 2013 was an event which takes place like every year at Vienna. Along with the New Year’s Concert, the Vienna Opera Ball 2013 was one of the events that take place in the Carnival Season. While preparing for the Vienna Opera Ball 2013, the auditorium is literally transformed in an original ballroom, the seats being removed and a new higher floor being installed, that would be level with the stage.

Vienna Opera Ball 2013, since 1877 !

The early days of this event took place in December, 1877, when Emperor Franz Joseph allowed a Ball to take place inside the Royal Court Opera. In the opening, the Wedding March from Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream was played, later following various artists and choires. The closing act was directed by Johann Strauss. The incomes from this ball made it possible for other balls to take place in the months to follow. Although these Balls took place each year, there was a time in the First and Second World War when it was necessary to cancel them. After these two wars, only in 1991 the Ball was again cancelled, due to the Persian Gulf War.

Vienna Opera Ball 2013, an event for celebrieties

This year, the Ball had several personalities, from the mundane society but also a few industrial magnates. Among the guests, famous fashion designer Harald Gloeoeckler spoke of the the Ball to me as grand as the Oscar festivities. Also present were business man Richard Lugner along with Hilary Swank and American Oscar winner Mira Sorvino. A few other similar events take place worldwide, amongst them being the Dubai Opera Ball and the New York Ball, but they are not affiliated with the Vienna Opera Ball. Although times change, sometimes not for the best, organisers of this Ball struggle to keep these traditions alive, and unaltered, overall maintaining the event as original as possible. Vienna Opera Ball 2013 was one of the best monden events, and the next one will take place on the 27-th of February 2014, guests being welcomed at 20:30 and the event starting at 22:00.
